Daniel Radcliffe will always be synonymous with Harry Potter, the role he brought to life across eight blockbuster films between 2001 and 2011. With HBO now rebooting J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series into a multi-season television adaptation, a new actor—Dominic McLaughlin—will step into the legendary role. Although Radcliffe has expressed that he does not want to overshadow the fresh cast, he felt compelled to offer his support as the new era begins.
During an appearance on Good Morning America, Radcliffe shared that he reached out personally to McLaughlin after learning of his casting as the new Boy Who Lived. “I wouldn’t say that anyone playing Harry has to reach out to me,” he explained, “but I know a few people working on the production.” Through those connections, Radcliffe decided to write McLaughlin a heartfelt letter, which the young actor responded to with what Radcliffe described as a “very sweet note.” Radcliffe emphasized that he hopes not to become “a spectre in the life of these children,” clarifying that his intention is purely supportive, not influential.
In his letter, Radcliffe wished McLaughlin immense joy throughout the journey, writing, “I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did—I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better one.” Seeing early photos of the new cast has made Radcliffe nostalgic and protective, reminding him of his own childhood experience portraying the iconic character. “I just want to hug them… it’s crazy that I was doing that at that age,” he reflected.
The reboot introduces a new trio of Hogwarts students, with McLaughlin joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The cast also includes Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid, alongside a young ensemble of new Hogwarts students. The series is slated to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
