HBO has officially confirmed that House of the Dragon will be returning for a fourth season, a significant announcement made even more noteworthy because Season 3 has yet to premiere. The news was revealed during a high-profile presentation by HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, who also offered the first glimpse of Season 3. The footage showcased Emma D’Arcy’s visibly strained yet resolute Queen Rhaenyra and Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen, armed and ready as the Targaryen civil war deepens. Season 3 is scheduled to arrive next summer, promising another intense installment of the fiery family conflict.
Deadline has reported that Season 4 is currently targeting a 2028 release, although HBO has not confirmed whether it will conclude the series. Showrunner Ryan Condal, collaborating with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, has previously said that four seasons would be the ideal length to fully explore the Dance of the Dragons storyline. However, Condal is expected to finalize that decision only after completing the writing for Season 4.
The Season 3 preview shown at the presentation offered striking glimpses of what’s ahead. Fans saw Queen Rhaenyra in a somber moment wearing her crown, as well as Daemon charging across a battlefield wielding the deadly Dark Sister. HBO also confirmed that its anticipated spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been renewed for Season 2, even though Season 1 will not premiere until 19 January 2026. The series follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) in adventures set decades before Game of Thrones.
