David Dhawan stays true to his signature style with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, a colourful comedy filled with romance, misunderstandings and over the top situations. The film does not try to reinvent the genre but focuses on delivering simple entertainment.
The story follows Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, whose marriage with Baani begins to fall apart due to their different life goals. As he finds himself involved with Preet, a series of lies, mix ups and comic situations create complete chaos. While the plot is predictable at times, the fast pace keeps the film engaging.
Varun Dhawan is the biggest highlight of the movie. His comic timing, energy and screen presence carry much of the film, often bringing back memories of the classic Govinda era of Bollywood comedies. He looks comfortable in the role and makes even familiar situations enjoyable.
Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde add charm to the story, while Maniesh Paul provides strong support with his humorous performance. Johnny Lever once again proves why he remains one of Hindi cinema’s most loved comedians, delivering some of the film’s funniest moments. Chunky Panday, Rakesh Bedi, Jimmy Sheirgill and Mouni Roy also contribute effectively to the comic confusion.
The film’s music, colourful visuals and lively presentation match its light hearted tone. Although it lacks originality and relies heavily on familiar comedy formulas, it succeeds in offering easy going entertainment for family audiences.
