There is an interesting conflict at the centre of Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra. The title refers to boundaries, and the film explores the difference between “the law has done its duty” and “law will take its course”. It is a conflict audiences have seen before, but the situation here is believable enough to raise questions about what is actually right.
Inspired by true events, Daayra follows DCP Raman Kumar, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, and DCP Ajooni Kohli, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan. A case places the two officers on opposite sides of the same system, creating the central conflict of the film. The story draws from several real cases rather than focusing on one particular incident, bringing truth, accountability and justice into the discussion.
The first half is the more engaging portion. When Ajooni is asked to investigate Raman Kumar’s encounter case, she tells her colleagues she will “investigate without prejudice”, before adding, “colleagues ko nahin incidents ko investigate karti hoon”. The line clearly establishes her approach. Later, Raman’s emotional statement, “phir se ek family ne beti khoi hai”, adds weight to the issue. References to changes in rules after the Delhi rape case further suggest that the film may explore the justice system in greater detail.
However, much of that promise fades after the interval. The second half focuses more on action and reaction, moving through the crime, the hunt for the criminals and the blurred line between duty and law. While the questions raised earlier remain relevant, the screenplay does not explore the wider system or the process of justice as deeply as it initially appears it might.
The film’s restrained treatment works in its favour. The background score is mostly subtle, allowing the scenes and performances to take centre stage.
Prithviraj and Kareena are well suited to their roles. Raman is shown as a calmer officer, while Kareena adds dark humour to Ajooni through her sarcastic investigative style. Kshitee Jog, in the role of the victim’s mother, makes a strong impact despite limited screen time.
Daayra ultimately works better as a simple crime thriller than as a detailed examination of justice and accountability. Still, it offers enough solid performances and engaging moments to make it a worthwhile watch.
