Suriya’s latest release Karuppu continued its strong run at the Indian box office with an impressive performance on its first Monday. The film collected around Rs. 16.25 crore on Day 4, showing only a 15 per cent drop compared to its opening day collection. The movie performed even better in Tamil Nadu, where it earned around Rs. 11 crore on Monday. This was only an 8 per cent drop from Day 1, showing that the film is maintaining steady audience interest.
With these collections, Karuppu has reached around Rs. 94 crore gross in India within just 4 days of release. Tamil Nadu remains the film’s strongest market, contributing around Rs. 58 crore to the total collection so far.
The film is now very close to creating two major records in Suriya’s career. Karuppu is only Rs. 2 crore away from becoming the actor’s highest grossing film in India. It is also just Rs. 6 crore short of becoming Suriya’s first film to cross the Rs. 100 crore gross mark in India. Both milestones are expected to be achieved today.
The Monday performance in Tamil Nadu is among the best ever seen for a regular working day. Most films with similar Monday collections had the support of a holiday, but Karuppu achieved these numbers on a normal weekday. Among non holiday Monday collections in Tamil Nadu, the film currently stands behind only The Greatest of All Time and Vikram. Those films later collected more than Rs. 200 crore and Rs. 180 crore respectively in the state.
Trade estimates suggest that Karuppu could finish with more than Rs. 150 crore collection in Tamil Nadu if the current trend continues over the coming days. The film is also performing steadily in other regions. The Telugu version is maintaining decent collections despite mixed audience reactions in some places. Karnataka and Kerala also contributed more than Rs. 1 crore each on Monday.
Karuppu is now being seen as Suriya’s first major theatrical HIT since Singam II in 2013. Over the years, several of the actor’s films either opened strongly but failed to continue their run or received appreciation later without a strong start. Some of his well received films were also released directly on digital platforms during the COVID period. With Karuppu, both strong opening numbers and positive audience support have come together after many years.
