The inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estimated ₹30,000 crore estate has taken a fresh turn, with newly submitted documents in the Delhi High Court indicating that he was actively assisting his former wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, and their two children, Samaira and Kiaan, in acquiring Portuguese citizenship.
Evidence Points to Ongoing Communication
According to court documents accessed by News18, WhatsApp chats and official records show that Sunjay and Karisma remained in touch regarding their children’s future, even after their divorce in 2016. The records suggest that Sunjay was facilitating the process of securing foreign nationality for Karisma and the kids.
One of the key messages reportedly reads: “India does not permit dual citizenship,” highlighting Sunjay’s awareness and involvement in the citizenship transition. This revelation could play a crucial role in determining the intent and actions of Sunjay regarding his children’s long-term security.
Children Challenge Alleged Forged Will
On Wednesday, the High Court heard a plea filed by Samaira and Kiaan, who are seeking a rightful share in their father’s massive estate. They have accused Priya Sachdev, Sunjay’s third wife, of forging a will to exclude them from the inheritance. The will in question was allegedly executed on March 21, just months before Sunjay’s sudden death on June 12 during a polo match in England.
Priya Sachdev Denies Allegations
Represented by senior advocates Rajiv Nayar and Shyel Trehan, Priya claimed that the suit by Sunjay’s children was not maintainable. Her legal team further alleged that the children had already received ₹1,900 crore worth of assets from a family trust shortly before filing the case.
In contrast, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, questioned the authenticity of the will and sought transparency regarding all assets.
Court Orders Asset Disclosure
Justice Jyoti Singh, presiding over the case, has ordered Priya to submit a detailed list of all movable and immovable assets belonging to Sunjay Kapur. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 9, when Priya is expected to file her formal response to the plaint.
As the high-stakes legal battle unfolds, the spotlight remains on the authenticity of the will and the rightful heirs to one of India’s largest family estates.
