In the ongoing legal dispute over the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, the Delhi High Court raised concerns about the request for confidentiality made by his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur. During a hearing on Thursday, Justice Jyoti Singh questioned Priya’s plea to file a list of Sunjay’s personal assets and liabilities in a sealed cover or through a confidentiality agreement, citing that it could obstruct the rights of other beneficiaries.
Sunjay Kapur, who passed away in London in June this year, was the former husband of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor. His children from that marriage Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur have contested a will presented by Priya Sachdev, his third wife. The document was submitted in August, claiming to be Sunjay’s last testament. However, both Sunjay’s children and his mother, Rani Kapur, have raised questions about its authenticity.
During the court proceedings, Priya’s counsel argued that the confidentiality request stemmed from security concerns, especially given the sensitive financial nature of the documents. “There are bank details, other financial details. Why should the public have someone’s bank account number?” the lawyer stated, also noting that details of the hearings were being discussed in press conferences.
However, Justice Jyoti Singh was not convinced by the argument, pointing out that secrecy could hamper the legal rights of Karisma’s children. “Allowing the application may be problematic for the simple reason that, as the alleged beneficiary of the estate, they have a right to question the assets disclosed,” she said. “If they are bound by this confidentiality club, how will they ever defend their case?”
The judge highlighted the necessity for transparency in a case where the veracity of a will is being challenged. On September 10, the court had already directed Priya to submit a list of Sunjay’s assets. Some media reports have speculated that the estate could be worth as much as ₹30,000 crore, but Samaira and Kiaan have stated they are unaware of the true extent of their father’s wealth.
With the stakes high and multiple parties involved, the case continues to draw public and media attention. The next hearing is scheduled for Friday, where the court is expected to further examine the question of confidentiality and the legitimacy of the contested will.
