Brett James, acclaimed Grammy-winning songwriter and member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, has died at age 57 following a tragic plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina. The accident occurred on Thursday, September 18, involving a Cirrus SR22T registered in James’ name. The aircraft had departed from Nashville earlier that day.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and WZTV Nashville, James was one of three people on board. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the crash happened near an elementary school, though no students or staff were injured.

Beyond songwriting, James co-founded Cornman Music, produced music, and served on boards for both the Country Music Association and the Recording Academy.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), FAA, and local authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash.
