Whitley And Dwayne’s Daughter Heads To Hillman, A Different World Trailer Reveals New Cast

Netflix has released the A Different World trailer, introducing Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter and a new group of students while original stars return.

Netflix has released the official trailer for A Different World, giving viewers a closer look at the new students arriving at the fictional Hillman College. The sequel series will follow a new generation of young people as they begin college life, while also bringing back several familiar characters from the original show. The 10 episode series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 24, 2026.

The main character is Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. She is the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, who were two of the most important characters in the original series. Although Deborah arrives at Hillman with a family connection to the college, her story will focus on her own experiences, friendships and challenges rather than simply copying her parents’ journey.

Deborah is described as a free spirited young woman who enjoys being in the spotlight but is still trying to understand what she wants from life. At Hillman, she meets students from different backgrounds, each dealing with their own hopes and problems.

The new group includes Rashida Duvall, played by Alijah Kai. She is a first generation college student studying criminal justice. Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille Johnson, a five star athlete who chooses Hillman because of its history and reputation.

Jordan Aaron Hall plays Amir Rodale, a psychology student who is good at helping others with their problems but finds it harder to deal with his own issues. Kennedi Reece plays Hazel Henry, a student from a small town who was raised in the church and begins developing her own beliefs as she experiences college life.

Chibuikem Uche plays Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian Nigerian fashion entrepreneur who is trying to find the confidence to follow his own creative ideas.

The sequel also brings back characters from the original series. Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison returns as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer reprises her role as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell returns as Ron Johnson.

The original A Different World ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 and followed students at the fictional historically Black Hillman College. The new series keeps the same setting but places the focus on a different generation.

A Different World will premiere on Netflix on September 24, 2026. Season one will feature 10 single camera episodes, with each episode running for approximately half an hour.
