The trailer of Udta Teer created curiosity with its unusual premise, and the film delivers an entertaining mix of espionage, comedy and unexpected twists. With Ayushmann Khurrana leading the story, this action comedy offers a refreshing change from routine Bollywood entertainers.
Story and screenplay
The story follows Bilal Ahmad (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Pakistani spy who loses his memory during a mission in India. He begins believing that he is an Indian officer responsible for protecting the country. The resulting confusion creates a series of funny situations involving mistaken identity, patriotism and espionage.
Director Aakash A. Kaushik makes good use of this unusual idea. The screenplay keeps the audience guessing, with several unexpected turns and a climax that adds another surprise. Although some developments may seem predictable, the journey remains engaging and entertaining.
Performances
Ayushmann is the film’s biggest strength. Bringing back the swagger seen in An Action Hero, he plays Bilal with complete conviction. His straight faced reactions to increasingly absurd situations create much of the humour without relying on exaggerated comedy.
Sara Ali Khan plays Yamini, Bilal’s wife. Her role has limited scope, but the film keeps the focus on its central storyline. The late Mukul Dev also makes an impression as Azhar Maqsood, adding interest to the antagonist’s side of the story.
Final verdict
Udta Teer successfully combines action, espionage and comedy into an accessible mainstream entertainer. A couple of songs interrupt the pace and could have been shorter, but the film’s twists and controlled humour help maintain interest.
The biggest attraction is Ayushmann’s performance and the absurd situation at the heart of the story. If you enjoy light hearted Hindi comedies with action and surprises, Udta Teer offers an entertaining watch for the family.
