The 2026 Emmy Award nominations have created a lot of buzz, with several unexpected snubs and surprise nominations becoming the biggest talking points. While many popular shows and actors earned well deserved recognition, a number of fan favourites were left out, proving that popularity alone is not enough to secure an Emmy nomination. This year’s list shows that the Television Academy is increasingly choosing fresh stories and new talent over long established favourites.
One of the biggest surprises was Netflix’s Stranger Things. After becoming one of the most successful and influential streaming series of the past decade, many expected its final season to receive major nominations in the drama and acting categories. Instead, the show was recognised mainly in technical categories, missing out on some of the night’s biggest honours. Many fans believed the farewell season would receive special recognition, but Emmy voters appeared ready to focus on newer shows instead.
Another major talking point was the absence of Sydney Sweeney. The actress had previously been considered one of the strongest award contenders for her performance in Euphoria, but she did not receive a nomination this year. While her co stars Zendaya and Colman Domingo were recognised, Sweeney’s omission surprised many viewers. Selena Gomez also missed out once again for her role in Only Murders in the Building, even though the popular mystery comedy continued to receive several nominations in other categories.
Another unexpected omission came from The Bear. Although the hit series continued to receive Emmy recognition, lead actor Jeremy Allen White was not nominated this time. Several members of the show’s popular cast were also missing from the acting categories. This has led many people to wonder if Emmy voters are beginning to move on from a series that dominated previous award seasons.
Television producer Taylor Sheridan also had a disappointing day. Despite creating several successful and widely watched shows over the past year, his projects received very little recognition. Paramount Plus earned only one nomination, highlighting the difference between commercial success and awards recognition.
On the positive side, Apple TV Plus drama Widow’s Bay became one of the biggest success stories of the nominations, earning an impressive 19 nominations despite arriving late in the eligibility period. Horror shows have traditionally struggled at major award ceremonies, making this achievement even more significant. Reality television also delivered a surprise as Dancing with the Stars returned to the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category for the first time in ten years.
This year’s nominations clearly show that Emmy voters are embracing change. Instead of repeatedly rewarding the same shows and stars, they appear more willing to recognise fresh series and new voices. Whether fans agree with these choices or not, one thing is certain. The 2026 Emmy Awards have already sparked plenty of discussion, and the biggest conversations may be about the famous names and hit shows that failed to make the final list.
