Rapper Mystikal, once one of the biggest names in hip hop, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to third degree rape in Louisiana. The sentencing took place on June 17 and brings an end to a legal case that has been closely followed for several years.
Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Tyler, was accused by a woman of raping her at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana, in 2022. During the sentencing hearing, the woman appeared in court and repeated her allegations. She told the court that she was sexually assaulted, physically attacked, choked and had her hair pulled during the incident. She asked the judge to hand down a strong punishment.
Before receiving his sentence, Mystikal addressed the court. According to reports, he told the victim, “If I did that to you, I deserve the maximum sentence.”
The rapper was initially charged with first degree rape, a much more serious charge that could have resulted in a life sentence if he had been convicted. However, in March 2026, he agreed to a plea deal and pleaded guilty to third degree rape. His lawyers later tried to withdraw the guilty plea, claiming he was emotionally distressed and did not fully understand the agreement when he accepted it. The court rejected that request, and the plea remained in place.

This latest conviction is not the first time Mystikal has faced major legal troubles. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion charges and served about six years in prison. He was also arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault case from 2016. Those charges were dropped in 2020 after prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to move forward. However, Mystikal had already spent around 18 months in jail while waiting for trial.
Over the years, the rapper often spoke about wanting to rebuild his life and career. He once described his ongoing legal problems as a recurring nightmare and said he hoped to make positive changes in his personal and professional life.
Mystikal rose to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hit songs like “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger (Been So Long).” He earned Grammy nominations and became one of the most recognizable voices in Southern hip hop.
Today, however, his music career is largely overshadowed by the many legal controversies that have followed him throughout the years. With a 20 year prison sentence now confirmed, the future of Mystikal’s career remains uncertain.
