Netflix has released the trailer for The Body, an upcoming teen horror series created by Quinn Shephard, who wrote and directed the Emmy nominated mystery Under the Bridge. The eight episode series explores teenage life through psychological drama, horror and dark humour. It draws on the emotional struggles of growing up while adding unsettling situations and unexpected twists to the story.
Quinn Shephard opens up about The Body
Shephard has described The Body as a personal project inspired by her own experiences as a teenager. Explaining what the series means to her, she said, “I literally made this for my teen self,” she shared. “Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp. It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror.”
Her description suggests that the show will combine the everyday pressures of teenage life with frightening moments and dramatic situations. The term “gritty camp” points to a style that brings together serious themes, exaggerated storytelling and dark humour rather than relying only on traditional horror elements.
Carrie and Mean Girls are among the inspirations
The creator has taken inspiration from several films she watched while growing up. These include Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures and Mean Girls. While some of these films explore supernatural horror, others focus on school friendships, social pressure and rivalries among teenagers.
Shephard was also strongly influenced by The Crucible, the 1953 play written by Arthur Miller. She described her interest in the play as a “massive hyperfixation”.
The play deals with fear, suspicion and accusations within a community. These themes connect with stories about group pressure and how people react when fear begins to influence their decisions. The series brings together these different influences to explore the complicated emotions and relationships that can shape teenage experiences.
The Body cast and release date
The series stars Kristina Bogic, Sara Boustany, Sofia Wylie, Geena Meszaros, Shirley Chen and Gabby Windey.
All eight episodes of The Body will arrive on Netflix on November 11. The trailer offers viewers an early look at the series, while the complete season will reveal how its teenage drama and horror elements develop.
