Barry Keoghan Breaks Silence on Joker Rumours and Opens Up About His Emotional New Film

Barry Keoghan talks about Butterfly Jam, Joker rumours, Beatles film buzz and why independent movies still mean the most to him.

Actor Barry Keoghan has returned to the Cannes Film Festival with a powerful new indie drama that is already creating buzz. The Saltburn star is appearing alongside Riley Keough in Butterfly Jam, the first English language feature film by director Kantemir Balagov. The movie has been selected to open the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes 2026, making it one of the most talked about premieres at the festival.

In Butterfly Jam, Keoghan plays the father of a Circassian family living in a close knit community in New Jersey. Speaking about the role, the actor admitted it feels strange and funny to now be playing father characters in films. He joked that life has changed quickly and he never imagined reaching this stage so soon. The film focuses heavily on family relationships, culture and identity, themes that Keoghan says made the story feel very emotional and personal. He described the movie as a true European style drama set in New Jersey, filled with raw emotions and realistic storytelling.

The actor also revealed that Butterfly Jam became the first feature film connected to his own production company, Wolfcub Productions. According to Keoghan, working on an independent project like this reminded him why he first fell in love with acting and filmmaking. He explained that smaller films often create a more honest and safe environment where actors can fully open up emotionally. He said there is a special hunger and passion on indie film sets that helps performers become more vulnerable and natural in front of the camera.

Keoghan had high praise for co star Riley Keough, calling her performance raw, unpredictable and amazing to watch. One memorable scene in the film shows the two actors dancing together in a kitchen to traditional Circassian music. Keoghan explained that the moment was meant to feel free and natural rather than perfectly choreographed, which added to the emotional realism of the film.

Fans also got a small update about Keoghan’s role as Ringo Starr in The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event directed by Sam Mendes. While he avoided revealing major details, he described the experience as incredible and praised the environment Mendes has created on set. He said that despite the huge scale of the project, it still carries the emotional spirit of an independent movie. Keoghan also spoke highly of cinematographer Greig Fraser and said he has learned a lot just by observing the filmmaking process around him.

However, the biggest question fans wanted answered was whether Keoghan will return as the Joker in The Batman Part II. The actor carefully avoided giving a direct answer, keeping the mystery alive. His short but chilling appearance in The Batman left audiences wanting more, and many are still hoping he will play a much larger role in the sequel.

Reflecting on his journey at Cannes, Keoghan laughed about the strange “animal theme” connected to many of his projects, mentioning titles like The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Bird, Butterfly Jam and even his company Wolfcub Productions. With major indie films, blockbuster franchises and a huge Beatles project ahead, Barry Keoghan’s career continues to grow rapidly, even as he remains deeply connected to the emotional energy of smaller films.
