Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar is a gritty thriller that explores fame, public perception and the complexities of justice. Instead of relying on twists and action, the film focuses on the impact of serious allegations and the media storm that follows.
The story follows Samar Mehra, played by Bobby Deol, a former television star whose life turns upside down after a woman accuses him of rape, blackmail and extortion. As the case gains attention, Samar finds himself trapped between public opinion, media scrutiny and a legal system struggling to separate facts from assumptions.
Bobby Deol delivers what may be the strongest performance of his career. He brings restraint, vulnerability and emotional depth to a character surrounded by uncertainty. Rather than presenting Samar as completely innocent or guilty, the film allows audiences to form their own opinions.
Sapna Pabbi is effective as Gayatri, the woman at the center of the controversy, while Saba Azad and Sanya Malhotra provide solid support. Anurag Kashyap’s direction keeps the tension alive throughout, especially in the prison sequences, which feel realistic and unsettling.
While the film occasionally tries to cover too many themes at once, including celebrity culture, media sensationalism and gender politics, it remains engaging because of its willingness to ask difficult questions. Bandar avoids simple answers and instead examines how quickly society can pass judgment before the full truth emerges.
