Some web series struggle when they move to the big screen, but Mirzapur The Movie manages to make the transition feel natural. Instead of simply becoming a three hour extension of the series, the film creates a fresh power game around characters audiences already know.
Akhandanand Tripathi aka Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) remains the undisputed king of Mirzapur. His belief that power comes through fear continues to shape the story. However, the film does not keep him at the centre of every scene. His famous idea that a king does not kill but orders becomes important here. Even when he is not directly visible, his influence continues to move the game.
This gives more importance to Govind ‘Guddu’ Pandit (Ali Fazal), Vinay ‘Bablu’ Pandit (Jitendra Kumar) and Babban ‘Babua’ Yadav (Ravi Kishan). Ravi Kishan makes a strong impact with his entry. His different styling, swagger and unpredictable performance make Babua feel like a genuine threat rather than another character added to the franchise.
The writing keeps several storylines moving before bringing them together. The twists and changing equations give the gangster drama enough momentum. The locations, including Rajasthan’s deserts, also give the film a larger cinematic scale while keeping its small town atmosphere intact.
Characters such as Beena Tripathi (Rasika Dugal), Vasudha Pandit (Sheeba Chaddha) and Mumtaz Bibi (Sonal Chauhan) add another layer to the story.
At over three hours, the film feels slightly stretched in places. Still, Mirzapur The Movie succeeds because it uses the familiar universe to create something bigger. Kaleen Bhaiya remains on the throne, but this time, there are enough people around him who could challenge it.
